We take what you'll actually spend each year in retirement and divide it by your safe withdrawal rate — that gives us your retirement target, the number your portfolio needs to reach by the age you retire.
Then we work backwards: given your current age and your expected growth rate, we calculate how much you'd need invested today for compound growth alone to carry you to that target, with no further contributions. That's your Coast FIRE number.
If what you currently have invested is already at or above that number, you've reached Coast FIRE — the growth from here does the rest. If not, we show you the gap between where you are and where you'd need to be.
